THE DIFFERENT PUBLISHER TYPES

There are three basic types of publishers: Traditional, Vanity, and Hybrid. Below is a very brief explanation of each.

TRADITIONAL PUBLISHERS:
A traditional publisher receives submissions and then carefully selects the best of the lot for publication. The traditional publisher, in conjunction with the author, professionally edits, formats, produces a cover, publishes, and promotes the book. The traditional publisher absorbs all the costs involved in the process and pays the author royalties on all sales. No traditional publisher charges authors for its services – EVER!

Since traditional publishers pay for everything and profit only if the book sells, they work hard to make their titles as successful as possible. Additionally, traditional publishers must be very selective as to which manuscripts they accept.

Deep Read Press is a traditional publisher and we accept only about 2-3% of the manuscripts we receive, but don’t let that discourage you. We welcome your submissions. Click Here to go to our Submissions page.

VANITY PRESSES:
Vanity presses accept all submissions, regardless of quality. They often make wild promises and are overly complimentarily toward authors.
Sadly, the sweet talk is just a sales pitch. In exchange for publishing books, vanity presses charge authors thousands of dollars. Additionally, vanity presses charge fees for editing and other services. Since vanity presses make profits from authors, not from sales, they have no stake in producing quality products, or in promoting books. If the author wants to have sells, it is up to the author to promote the book. If a few books should sell, the vanity press keeps most of the royalties too.

Vanity presses disappoint thousands of authors each year. While their practices may not be technically illegal, they are often misleading. We suggest you avoid vanity presses.

HYBRID PUBLISHERS:
Hybrid presses claim to uphold the quality standards of traditional publishers, but require authors to pay most or all the cost of publication. It is very difficult to determine if hybrid presses have interest in selling books, or if all their profits come from authors. We suggest you avoid hybrid publishers and go with a traditional publisher.

As an author, you are responsible for your career. We strongly suggest that you don’t hand over to any publisher thousands of dollars, for any reason. You deserve payment for your work.

When your manuscript is finished, we suggest you submit it to several traditional publishers. If you receive offers to publish your work, investigate the proposals carefully and then go with the one that is best for you.

If you are considering submitting to Deep Read Press, go to our Submissions page, review our guidelines, and then email your submission to us. We look forward to hearing from you.
